Scala solomonis, or a tract leading to heaven, [ca. 1650].

Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, of religious treatise concerning the way to salvation. The author begins with the necessity for parents to vest their children with knowledge of God, declaring, "I have read of a young man amongst the Switzers, that for the perpetration of some hainous crime, or some perhaps scelastique villany, receiv'd the doome of death; & the young mans father himselfe, for the execution of his sonne the chosen man (a thinge extreamly sad it's true) yet was it that the father should in some sort to have share, & beare his parte in suffering with his sonne, for his not better breeding of his childe. Nor mothers are exempted in this charge & more especially when children are but young, when apt to streame out youth in vanitie." He goes on to describe how knowledge of God may be obtained, how to put that knowledge into practice, the duties "to be observed in the service of our Lord and Master Christe," and how a man may be saved.
